Heikki Kovalainen has played down talk of permanently replacing Ferrari-bound Kimi Raikkonen at his former team Lotus Renault.
The 32-year-old Finn will sit in the final two races of the year with his countryman suffering back problems.
However, Kovalainen revealed that he is currently in talks with Catherham, where he has spent the past season as a reserve, and is helping out his old employers in an emergency.
"I'm here for the team more than myself," he told AutoSport. "I haven't spoken to Lotus about next year at all.
"The only team that I've really spoken seriously to is Caterham, and we're getting to a point where we're closer to starting to agree terms.
"So I think that's still the most likely option for me."
Kovalainen drove for Lotus in 2010 and 2011.
