Jenson Button fastest in final practice in Valencia

McLaren's Jenson Button sets the fastest time of final practice ahead of qualifying at the European Grand Prix in Valencia.

McLaren's Jenson Button put his recent woes behind him by topping the timesheets in the final practice session at the European Grand Prix in Valencia.

Lotus look quick this weekend and Romain Grosjean set the early pace of the hour-long session before teammate Kimi Raikkonen was the first man under one minute and 40 seconds moments later.

The winner of the last race in Canada, Lewis Hamilton, then crept ahead of Raikkonen midway through the session.

Reigning double world champion Sebastian Vettel showed his pace by going three-tenths quicker with his next flying lap at the street circuit on the Spanish coast.

The German's time was wiped out by Grosjean, trying out the softer tyres and achieving a time 0.779s quicker than anyone else.

The rest of the field ended the session trying out the softer compound, with Button taking first place with a 1:38.562 with five minutes remaining.

Vettel went out on a brand new set of softs to try to snatch top spot in the session but was caught up in traffic and made a mistake on his flying lap.

Force India will be encouraged by their performance as Nico Hulkenburg and Paul Di Resta took fourth and fifth respectively.

Qualifying for the eighth race of the year takes place later this afternoon and you can follow live commentary right here on Sports Mole.
