Jenson Button says that inconsistency is costing him the Drivers' Championship.

McLaren driver Jenson Button has admitted that he is disappointed with his personal inconsistency after the Italian Grand Prix.

Having emerged victorious in his last outing at the Belgian Grand Prix, Button was forced to retire in Monza.

The Brit now trails championship leader Fernando Alonso by 78 points having gone into the race just 53 points behind the Ferrari driver, and he admits that he is costing himself the title.

"It's not good," said Button of his title hopes.

"Today's result shows you that if you can be consistent, you have a chance of winning the championship.

"At the moment for me, it's 25 points one race, none in the next. I'm a long, long way off but I feel confident in my team and my ability to fight for wins. At the moment that's all I care about."

The next race is the Singapore Grand Prix on September 23.
