Renowned Formula 1 medic Professor Sid Watkins dies, aged 84

Formula 1 safety and medical delegate Professor Sid Watkins dies at the age of 84 after over 30 years working within the sport.

Formula 1 safety and medical delegate Professor Sid Watkins has passed away at the age of 84.

The English neurosurgeon, who was a close friend of the late Ayrton Senna, became a huge figure within Formula 1 after saving the lives of numerous drivers, including Ferrari's Didier Pironi at the 1982 German Grand Prix.

The Liverpool-born medical professional spent over 30 years working within the sport and is also known for playing his part in saving McLaren's Mika Hakkinen from a crash scene at Adelaide in 1995.

Watkins was married with four sons and two daughters.
