Colin Montgomerie expects Stephen Gallacher to be one of Europe's top scorers in Ryder Cup

Former European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie believes that rookie Stephen Gallacher will be one of the hosts' top performers later this month at Gleneagles.

Colin Montgomerie has said that he expects Ryder Cup rookie Stephen Gallacher to be one of the hosts' top scores at the biennial event later this month.

Gallacher was last week given a wildcard pick, ahead of the more experienced Luke Donald, by 2014 Europe captain Paul McGinley after agonisingly missing out on an automatic qualification place.

Montgomerie, who won the Ryder Cup as captain in 2010, believes that fellow Scot Gallacher will feel comfortable in his home county at Gleneagles.

"It's great for Scottish golf and I'm delighted he is there," Montgomerie told Sky Sports News.

"He'll be nervous but his record around Gleneagles is second to none. He's won there and I expect Stephen to be one of our top points scorers – he's playing as well as that."

Europe are chasing a third straight victory in the contest against the USA and have won eight of the last 10 battles.
