The pair were trusted in the final match for the second time in 24 hours after they defeated Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley yesterday afternoon, and they were never in danger of slipping up against their opponents, who looked weary after already playing 54 holes.

Europe were four shots ahead after six before another missed putt from the Americans saw them lead by five at the turn.

Fowler made a putt at 11 for their first hole of the afternoon, but the five-shot margin was soon back at the 13th to leave the Americans almost at the point of no return.

More poor play for the visitors on the 14th gave McDowell the chance to roll a putt up close and he did just that to see Europe move eight points to five ahead.
