After Simpson had mis-hit the first shot of the competition at Gleneagles, it was one-way traffic for the European pairing as they denied their opponents a win on any of the 14 holes that were played.

Stenson registered a birdie on the fourth to give himself and Rose an early two-shot lead but missed chances at six, seven and eight meant that they failed to capitalise on a slow start by Watson and Simpson.

However, another birdie from the Swede gave Europe a three-shot lead at the turn, and that soon became four shots at the start of the back nine.

The American duo managed to stop the rot on the following three holes but they played the 14th badly, and Rose took full advantage to hole from 10 feet for the win.
