Rory McIlroy: 'I was wrong to throw my club in lake'

Rory McIlroy admits that frustration got the better of him when he threw his three-iron into a lake during the second round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship.

World number one Rory McIlroy has admitted that he was in the wrong when he threw his three-iron into a lake during the second round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship yesterday.

The Northern Irishman hurled the club into the water on the par-five eighth - a hole he eagled during Thursday's first round - after pulling his approach into the drink.

"Frustration got the better of me," he told Sky Sports News. "Following on from last week I feel like it's very close and to hit shots like that you get frustrated, but I shouldn't have did what I did.

"It all bottled up and had to let it go somehow and that's what happened. I don't feel good about doing it but I will hopefully have a new three-iron on the way in the morning and be able to go out and play with another one.

"I wouldn't encourage kids at home to do the same thing."

McIlroy was able to steady himself after losing his temper, going on to record a two-under-par round of 70. He is in a tie for 11th place going into the weekend, but a hefty eight shots behind leader JB Holmes.
