US Open champion Rory McIlroy is confident that he can succeed in Atlanta for the US PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy has revealed that he is confident he can stamp out a victory in the US PGA Tournament in Atlanta.

The 22-year-old has been grouped with Open winner Darren Clarke and Masters champion Charl Schwartzel for tee off on Thursday.

Despite the Northern Irishman's disappointment at the Open at Sandwich this summer, he is confident that his form is good enough for the upcoming tournament.

"I'm playing very well," BBC Sport quotes McIlroy as saying. "I drove the ball great last week. I'm hitting it nicely.

"As long as I can hole a few putts this week, I feel as if I'm in with a good chance."

The US Open champion recently revealed that he intends to move to America and focus on the US PGA Tour.

"I feel very comfortable in this country and playing on the types of golf courses over here," he added. "I also get a great response from the crowds - I feel the reception I get is like an American player."

Meanwhile, former world number one Tiger Woods tees off on the 10th hole on Thursday.
