Retief Goosen holds one-shot lead in California

Retief Goosen leads the Northern Trust Open after a second round of 70 in California.

Retief Goosen has moved into a one-stroke lead at the halfway point of the Northern Trust Open after a steady round of 70 at Rivera Country Club.

The two-time US Open champion, who was in a five-way tie at the top of the leaderboard after day one, had threatened to move clear when birdies at the fifth and ninth left the South African veteran at seven-under-par reaching the turn.

However, despite picking up a further shot on the 14th, bogeys at 10 and 15 saw the 46-year-old settle for 70 and a one-stroke advantage over Ryan Moore, Justin Thomas and Canada's Graham DeLaet.

Vijay Singh, who carded his lowest round since 2012 on the PGA Tour on Thursday, was unable to maintain his form as he shot a 74 to slide down the leaderboard.

Englishman Luke Donald has missed the cut, despite hitting a two-under-par 69 to recover to four-over for the tournament.
