England women's artistic gymnastics team crowned Commonwealth Games champions

England's women's artistic gymnastics team fend off competition from Australia to win the gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

England's women's artistic gymnastics team followed in the footsteps of their male counterparts to win the gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Twenty-four hours after watching the men take top spot on the podium, Claudia Fragapane, Ondine Achampong, Kelly Simm, Georgia-Mae Fenton and Alice Kinsella were 0.0500 marks above Australia before the final rotation.

Some magnificent work on vault saw England open up a healthy gap at the top, with Kinsella and Achampong nailing their double-twisting Yurchenkos after an emotional floor performance from the returning Fragapane.

England - who settled for silver behind Canada in 2018 - finished with a total of 161.100 to surge to the top of the rankings, and Australia could not respond on floor, finishing with 158.000.

Such a score was enough for the silver medal, as defending champions Canada (152.700) propelled themselves above South Africa (147.750) to win the bronze medal.

A youthful Wales team ended with some notable errors on floor to post a total of 147.050, although that was enough to see them demote Scotland (146.500) to sixth.

England's Kinsella and Achampong qualified for the all-around final, and the former will also compete for floor and beam titles; Achampong also made the uneven bars final.

Meanwhile, Fenton will go for individual glory in the beam and bars events - posting a 14.000 on the latter in the team final, which was the highest score of the day.
