Wales gymnast Laura Halford "pleased" with day one display

Welsh gymnast Laura Halford expresses her delight after winning Wales's first medal of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Teenage Welsh gymnast Laura Halford has expressed her delight at her performance during today's rhythmic gymnastics at Glasgow 2014.

The Commonwealth Games debutante, 18, won a silver medal in the team final alongside Francesca Jones and Nikara Jenkins, with her routines also sending her through to the finals of the hoop, ball, ribbon and individual all-around events.

"I was really pleased with my performances," she told Sports Mole tonight after claiming Wales's first medal of the Games.

"There's a few things that I need to improve on for tomorrow, but I'll be happy wherever I finish as long as I do a good routine."

Halford also paid tribute to Jones, who is appearing at her third Commonwealth Games and yesterday flew the flag for Wales at the opening ceremony.

"She supports us all the time, especially in training if we're having a bad day," Halford added.

"She's been through it all before so she can teach us and we're learning from the best."

Halford's combined score of 55.600 meant that she placed fifth in the individual standings today. She registered the third-highest scores in both the hoop and ball disciplines.
