Former rhythmic gymnast Frankie Jones has been appointed to the Commonwealth Games Wales board as an athlete advisor.

The 24-year-old retired from the sport after scooping six medals at the 2014 Glasgow Games, one of which was gold in the ribbon event.

The board elected Jones to be an advisor to the commission of Welsh athletes from each sport until the Gold Coast Games in four years' time.

"I am proud and honoured to be appointed the athletes advisor to the Commonwealth Games Wales board," said Jones. "During my competitive career I have had the honour of representing Wales at three consecutive games and I can honestly say they are the competitions that hold the strongest and most amazing memories of my 18 years of participation in gymnastics.

"Being athletes advisor will allow me to continue to inspire younger athletes to follow in my footsteps, overcome adversity and win for Wales."

Commonwealth Games Wales chair Helen Phillips added: "The board are focussed on providing the very best performance environment at each Commonwealth and Youth Games. A high performing athlete vision of what that looks like is an essential voice on our board.

"From clothing, culture, code of conduct's and inspirational ideas to aid an athlete's experience is essential in our planning. It is our intention to do everything we can to enable an athlete to excel when competing for Wales."

Jones was given the David Dixon Award in the summer for being the 'outstanding athlete' of Glasgow 2014.
