An England fan has described how his earlobe was bitten off during an attack by a fellow supporter at the World Cup in Brazil.

Courtney Farquharson has revealed that four men targeted him after he defended Wayne Rooney following the Manchester United striker's equaliser during Uruguay's 2-1 victory last month.

The 24-year-old, who is a student at Sheffield Hallam University, has also revealed that he received racist abuse by the attackers.

"A few minutes before the final whistle, the guys who had been shouting things at us the whole game - racist things at me like 'black cunt' – left their seats," Mr Farquharson told The Mirror. "But then two of them came back, and one flipped my jester's hat off my head.

"I was furious, so I jumped up to ask him what he was doing and he grabbed me around the neck. I felt a tug on my ear but I didn't think anything of it. It must have been a clean bite."

The student, who required stitches and spent the night in hospital, also claimed that he chased after the attacker once he was told that part of his ear was missing.
