A statement on Riyad Mahrez's Facebook account announcing his retirement has been outed as a hoax.
The social media post said that the Leicester City star's playing career had come "to an end" but, according to Sky Sports News, it was the work of a hacker.
"After the last consultation with many doctors, I've decided to stay away from football," the statement read. "As my time as a football player comes to an end, I would like to say few words.
"I want to thank everybody for the kindness and support they have shown me in this incredible city, you will be always in my heart."
Mahrez's Leicester future hung in the balance when a deadline-day move to Manchester City fell through, after which he was absent from training for a week.
However, the Algerian has since affirmed his commitment to the Foxes after scoring a 97th-minute equaliser in their 1-1 draw against Bournemouth last weekend.
