The city of Liverpool will mark the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster today by paying tribute to the victims.

Liverpool Football Club will hold their annual memorial service at Anfield this afternoon to pay their respects to the 96 supporters who lost their lives following a crush at the Hillsborough ground in 1989.

Players and staff will be joined by the victims' families, while thousands of football scarves donated from numerous clubs and supporters will be laid out onto the pitch in the shape of '96' for the service.

In the city, church bells will ring 96 times at 3.06pm, which is the time that the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest was abandoned on that day 25 years ago.

A silence will be observed in the city and all public transport will be halted at that time, while a screen at Lime Street railway station will display a photo of each of the victims that died following the tragedy on April 15, 1989.
