The South Yorkshire Police involved in the Hillsborough disaster, which resulted in 96 Liverpool fans losing their lives, kept money found on the victims in 1989, a report has revealed.

Documents released by the Hillsborough Independent Panel state that £14.35 recovered from the scene was put into the force's finance department, as opposed to being donated to the disaster fund.

The news comes after members of the force at the time accused Liverpool fans of stealing money from those who perished during the disaster.

"That the force responsible for the deaths of 96 people kept some of the money found is beyond belief," the Daily Star quotes Hillsborough Justice campaigner Sheila Coleman as saying.

"The fact that they decided to keep it and not even consider donating it to the disaster fund, speaks volumes as to the mind-set of the South Yorkshire Police and their contempt for Liverpool football fans and their families."

The 'accidental' verdicts from the original inquest were quashed by the courts last year following the revelations that police altered over 100 statements in an attempt to place blame on the supporters.
