Hillsborough justice campaigner Anne Williams has passed away at the age of 62 after losing her battle with cancer.

Anne was one of the prominent figures in the families' fight for the truth surrounding the death of 96 Liverpool fans, who were caught up in a crush at the Hillsborough stadium during an FA Cup semi-final between the Merseyside outfit and Nottingham Forest in 1989.

Her campaign included fighting for a new inquest into the death of her son Kevin, who is said to have asked for his mum after the official 3.15pm time of death for the victims.

Kenny Dalglish, who was the manager of Liverpool at the time of the disaster, was quoted by BBC News as saying that the death was "really sad but for her a release from her suffering and a chance to see her boy again.

"I am sure Kevin will be telling her how proud of her he was [and] our thoughts and prayers are with her family," he said.

Anne's last public appearance was at Anfield for the memorial to mark the 24th anniversary of the tragedy on Monday.
