Gambling advert featuring Memphis Depay banned due to footballer's age

A gambling advert featuring Manchester United winger Memphis Depay is banned by the ASA due to the footballer being underage.

A gambling advert featuring Manchester United winger Memphis Depay has reportedly been banned because the footballer is underage.

Advertising rules for gambling companies state that a person under the age of 25 should not play a "significant role" in an ad campaign.

This particular advert from Ladbrokes shows 21-year-old Depay sitting on the pitch, back to camera with his shoulders slumped.

After the ad, which was sent via email, received complaints, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) agreed to ban it.

"The ad featured the sole image of Memphis Depay who was under the age of 25 at the time the ad was seen and we therefore considered that he played a significant role in the marketing communication," the Daily Star quotes the ASA as saying.

"The ad had not appeared in a place, such as on the advertiser's own website, where a bet could be placed directly through a transactional facility. Nor had he been used to illustrate specific betting selections where he was the subject of the bet offered. We therefore concluded that the ad was irresponsible and breached the code."

Depay is on international duty with the Netherlands, preparing for Friday's friendly against Wales in Cardiff.
