Chris Smalling apologises over 'insensitive' fancy dress costume

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling apologises after a photograph of him dressed up like a suicide bomber appears in a newspaper.

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has issued an apology after a photograph of him dressed up like a suicide bomber surfaced.

The image, which appeared in Thursday's edition of The Sun, was taken at a fancy dress party held at the player's home.

Smalling's costume consisted of cans of Red Bull and empty bottles of Jagermeister strapped to his chest, described as "attempted comedy play on the popular 'jager bomb' drink".

However, Smalling has since apologised for what he describes as an "insensitive decision".

He said that he "fully accepts in hindsight it was an ill-thought out and insensitive decision, absolutely no harm was intended whatsoever and he apologizes for any offence caused."

United have declined to comment on the incident.
