Bishop Auckland fan leaves club £300,000 in will

Late Bishop Auckland supporter Colin Rowell donates £300,000 to the club in his will.

A lifelong Bishop Auckland fan has left £300,000 to the non-League club in his will.

Colin Rowell, who passed away in January at the age of 79, donated the majority of his estate to the Northern League Division One outfit.

Club officials have described the gesture as "unprecedented" and have confirmed plans to scatter Rowell's ashes on the pitch as well as name a section of their Heritage Park stadium after him.

"Although we have received one or two bequests before, we've had nothing like this," BBC Sport quotes Bishop Auckland chairman Richard Tremewan as saying.

Rowell, who was unmarried and had no children, was a Bishop Auckland supporter for more than 70 years.

"Colin loved sport of all kinds, but football, in particular," said Karen Eyre, the executor of his will.

"Shortly before he died, he said to me that his dream would be to have his ashes scattered on the penalty spot at the new ground.

"He would have been delighted to know that's what is going to happen."

Rowell's will stated that the donation must be used to improve the club's home ground.
