Former England international Paul Gascoigne has admitted that he refuses to take painkillers due to fears that he could become addicted.

The 46-year-old has been struggling with his drinking problems this year, so much so that he was admitted to a rehab clinic in the US in the summer.

Gascoigne is said to have recently spent £35,000 on dental implants, but has claimed that he will not take tablets to help reduce the pain.

"It's fucking killing us but painkillers lead us to drinks and drugs," the Daily Star quotes Gascoigne as saying. "It's my only option. Either that or going back to rehab."

Gascoigne was fined £1,000 for a drunken assault at a railway station earlier this year.
