Former striker and Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker leaves Twitter for "personal reasons".

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has apparently quit Twitter.

Lineker posted a short message on the social networking site this evening that read: "I'm leaving twitter for personal reasons. Thanks all."

The former Leicester City, Everton, Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur goalscorer made the surprise move having accrued over a million followers on the social media site.

It is almost a year to the day since the 52-year-old signed up for Twitter and the exit surprised his son George, who quoted the goodbye message and added: "You what?"

Lineker famously went his whole career without ever picking up a yellow or red card, for which he was awarded the FIFA Fair Play Award in 1990.
