Gary Lineker: 'Tottenham Hotspur can challenge Chelsea'

Gary Lineker says that Tottenham Hotspur can challenge Chelsea for third place in the Premier League.

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Gary Lineker has insisted that his old club can challenge Chelsea for third place this season.

Spurs beat Swansea City 1-0 at White Hart Lane on Sunday in the Premier League to move up to fourth in the table.

Lineker believes that the current Spurs squad is destined for great things in the future.

When asked whether Tottenham could stay in the top four, Lineker told talkSPORT: "I think so when you look at their squad. They're as competitive as any other team.

"Man United, Man City and Chelsea are probably the most likely top three, but Spurs could challenge Chelsea for that third spot. Arsenal could come back into it and possibility Everton who have been very consistent, but won't be helped by the probable lengthy absence of Marouane Fellaini.

"Spurs have got the makings of being a very good team. They've got a very strong squad and good depth if they suffer one or two injuries. I think they can do it (qualify for the Champions League next season)."

Spurs host Stoke City in their next match on Saturday.
