Wigan Warriors overcome Leeds Rhinos challenge

Super League leaders Wigan Warriors edge out defending champions Leeds Rhinos 20-16 at the Etihad Stadium.

Super League leaders Wigan Warriors have earned a narrow 20-16 victory over champions Leeds Rhinos at the Etihad Stadium.

Sam Tomkins touched down on nine minutes for his 30th try of the season before Pat Richards added the extras to put the Warriors 6-0 ahead.

Kevin Sinfield kicked over on 17 minutes to get Leeds off the mark and he converted his own try soon after to give his side the lead.

Leeds then extended their advantage minutes before the break when Kallum Watkins touched down, but Wigan had the final say of the half as Richards converted Josh Charnley's try.

Joe Vickery went over seven minutes into the second period to reduce Leeds' deficit, but Wigan managed to hold on during a nervy finish to claim the win.
