Shane Williams declares that the British and Irish Lions have the mental edge to succeed against Australia, after surprisingly joining the squad on Monday.

Welsh winger Shane Williams has insisted that the British and Irish Lions have an air of confidence amongst the squad that bodes well for a successful tour.

Williams answered a shock call to join Warren Gatland's team last weekend, taking part in his first training session yesterday morning.

The 36-year-old was part of the last Lions side to win a Test match in South Africa four years ago, and believes that the current crop have the mental edge required to succeed Down Under.

He told reporters: "You can sense the hunger here in the likes of Warren, Rob Howley and certainly in the players.

"The players seem a lot more focused and a bit more confident in each other's ability. Just running alongside them today, there is almost like an arrogance running off them of where they believe that they can win this series.

"That's great to have. Sometimes, these tours are won mentally rather than physically; they are in a strong mental place at the moment."

Williams has gone straight into the Lions starting XV for today's tour match against the Brumbies, alongside fellow late inclusion Christian Wade.
