The British and Irish Lions have been beaten for the first time on their tour of Australia with a 14-12 defeat to the Brumbies in Canberra.

The tourists staged a late comeback at the Canberra Stadium, but it was not enough to stop them suffering a maiden defeat.

The Lions struggled during the first half and they found themselves 0-5 down on five minutes when Tevita Kuridrani went over in the corner.

However, Ian Prior missed the resulting conversion when he dragged his kick wide of the posts.

The Brumbies extended their lead towards the end of the opening 40 minutes through Jesse Mogg's penalty, but Stuart Hogg got the Lions on the board in stoppage time with a kick of his own.

The tourists continued to labour in the second half as Mogg added two more penalties for the hosts to give them a 14-3 advantage.

Hogg and Owen Farrell then started a Lions comeback with their respective kicks before Farrell scored again to bring the away side to within two points of their opponents with eight minutes remaining.

Despite their best efforts to find a winning score, the Lions were unable to make a final breakthrough.
