Sam Burgess not in England squad for final Rugby World Cup match

Sam Burgess loses his place in the England squad for the hosts' final Rugby World Cup match against Uruguay on Saturday.

Stuart Lancaster has dropped Sam Burgess from his matchday squad of 23 for England's final Rugby World Cup match against Uruguay in Manchester.

Burgess was part of the squad in England's first three matches of the tournament, but has been left out for the dead rubber against Uruguay on Saturday.

Lancaster has made eight changes to his starting XV and handed first starts of the tournament to seven players.

Four of those - backs Danny Care, Jack Nowell, Henry Slade and Alex Goode - will make the first World Cup appearances of their career.

"This is an opportunity for us to finish the tournament with a strong performance against Uruguay and a chance for the likes of young players such as Jack Nowell and Henry Slade to play in a World Cup," Lancaster told reporters.

"We owe it to ourselves and the supporters who have been brilliant throughout. This is an important game for rugby in the North of England and we want to give those people who have been looking forward to this game something to cheer about."

England have no chance of reaching the quarter-finals of their own tournament after losing their last two matches against Wales and Australia, who meet at Twickenham on Saturday to decide the Pool A winner.

England: M. Vunipola, T. Youngs, Cole; Launchbury, Parling; Haskell, Robshaw; Easter; Care, Ford, Nowell, Farrell, Slade, Watson, Goode
Replacements: George, Marler, Wilson, Kruis, Wood, Wigglesworth, Joseph, Brown
