Wasps close in on move to Coventry's Ricoh Arena

Aviva Premiership side Wasps are given the green light for a £30m takeover of Coventry's Ricoh Arena as a potential move to the Midlands gathers pace.

Aviva Premiership side Wasps have been given the go-ahead to take over Coventry's Ricoh Arena as they eye a move to the Midlands.

The Coventry City Council voted in favour of a switch for the side, a relocation that is expected to cost as much as £30m.

However, Worcester Warriors are understood to be heavily against any switch, and are reportedly planning to seek compensation from the RFU and Premiership Rugby should they alter academy boundaries to help the move.

"Wasps have spent years looking for a home that will help them fulfil their ambitions and visions," Coventry City Council leader Ann Lucas is quoted as saying by PA.

"They believe the Ricoh Arena could become one of the best sporting arenas in Europe: we believe that too. It is no secret we have been negotiating with Wasps.

"We know they are absolutely focused on delivering success for their club, the Ricoh and Coventry."

Wasps currently play their home games at Wycombe Wanderers' Adams Park, and would also move their training ground from Acton in West London should the move go through.

Coventry City, meanwhile, will continue to host their matches at the Ricoh Arena having recently returned to their home ground following a controversial stint at Northampton Town's Sixfields Stadium.
