Munster survived a strong finish from Edinburgh to record their third win of the season in the Heineken Cup.
A scrappy first half saw Ronan O'Gara kick Munster to a 12-3 lead at half time, with few try-scoring opportunities for either side.
Both sides were reduced to 14 men for a time in the second half after Dave Kilcoyne and Greig Laidlow were both shown yellow cards, Laidlow's resulting in a penalty try for Munster.
Conor Murray extended the visitors' lead with a try to put Munster 23 points ahead inside the last 20 minutes.
The hosts fought back towards the end of the match, Douglas Fife crossing the whitewash twice inside the last 10 minutes to cut Munster's advantage.
The win sees Munster move up to second in pool one, while Edinburgh are without a win in the tournament this season.
