Jean de Villiers has been named as South Africa's captain for the test series against England, which begins on Saturday.
The 31-year-old centre, who has won 72 caps, will hope to lead the Springboks to success when they face Stuart Lancaster's men on each of the next three Saturdays in Durban, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth.
He said: "My heart was in my throat when the coach (Heyneke Meyer) told me.
"I realise there is massive responsibility with this position. The real, hard work starts now."
England's young side will look to build on an encouraging Six Nations' campaign earlier this year when they face 2007 World Cup winners South Africa.
