Team Scotland swimmer Robbie Renwick has insisted that he was not fully focused on clinching a Commonwealth medal in the 400m freestyle final at Tollcross this evening.
The 26-year-old finished seventh, just one place ahead of his teammate Stephen Milne, while England's James Guy scooped bronze for his efforts.
"I've got the 200m tomorrow, and I think that was in the back of my mind," Renwick told reporters. "From the start, I just didn't feel that good.
"'Do I risk it and put in much effort and maybe come fifth or sixth or do I save a little towards the end so I'm in a shout of getting the gold medal tomorrow?'. I think subconsciously, I held back a little bit.
"I'm pretty disappointed, I would love to be one of these swimmers who can do back-to-back races, but the reality is, I need to be realistic and save my energy for when it counts."
Canada's Ryan Cochrane won gold, while David McKeon of Australia earned silver.
