Live Commentary: Olympic swimming - day five as it happened

Sports Mole brings you live updates from the Aquatics Centre at London 2012.

Good morning and welcome to Sports Mole's live coverage of day five of the Olympic swimming.

We have another exciting day of aquatic action coming up, with Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte going head to head once again in this morning's men's 200m individual medley.

Looking ahead to this evening, there are four gold medals up for grabs, and Team GB duo Michael Jamieson and Andrew Willis could both make the podium in the men's 200m breaststroke final.

Fellow Briton Jemma Lowe is hoping she can do the same after impressing during the semi-finals of the women's equivalent.

Please note that the heats get under way at 10:00am.

21.37Join us at the same time tomorrow when Rebecca Adlington attempts to defend her 800m freestyle crown.

21.35That's all from us today. It's been quite a day in the pool. We've had a silver medal for Team GB, a new world record in the women's 200m breaststroke, and an Olympic record in the women's 4x200m freestyle relay.

21.17The US clinch it, with Australia taking the silver, and bronze going to France.

21.16It's a two-way battle between the Australians and the US, who are led by Alison Schmitt now!

21.11Caitlin McClatchey leads Team GB off, but the US have take a significant lead through Missy Franklin.

21.06To round off the evening we have the women's 4x200m relay final, and Team GB are in this one!

20.53Cseh wins it, but it was close. Roebuck comes in seventh and won't make the final.

20.50Joe Roebuck of Team GB is up now. He also has a difficult heat with Chad le Clos and Laszlo Cseh in it.

20.50Lochte wins it with a time of 1:56.13.

20.48Very impressive from James Goddard in the men's 200m individual medley semi-final. He was in a heat with Phelps and Lochte, and took third behind the American heavyweights.

20.39She breaks the world record and comes first with a time of 2:20.00!

20.39Soni is first to turn ahead of the final stretch and is right on the world record here.

20.36Rebecca Soni of the US is expected to win the second, but anything can happen.

20.33Rikke Pedersen of Denmark wins the first semi-final of the women's 200m breaststroke semi-final with a time of 2:22.23.

20.33Brent Hayden of Canada earns bronze.

20.31Nathan Adrian takes the gold in the men's 100m freestyle from under the nose of favourite James Magnussen, who had to settle for silver.

20.29Mireia Belmonte Garcia of Spain took silver in that one, with bronze going to Natsumi Hoshi of Japan.

20.19She falls outside of the medals and ends up in sixth. Liuyang Jiao of China takes the gold with an Olympic record time of 2:04.06.

20.18Lowe is third to turn at the halfway stage. If she can hold this there could be a medal in it.

20.17Here comes Jemma Lowe in the women's 200m butterfly final! She's off to a great start!

20.00Impressive by Clary. He is the fastest qualifier on 1:54.71.

19.59Clary is first, but Zhang made him work for that! Watanabe of Japan is in third.

19.58Lochte finished in 1:55.40. Clary leads at the halfway point of the second semi, followed by Zhang of China.

19.56We're into the men's 200m backstroke semi-finals now. Lochte wins the first heat. Tyler Clary is up in the second.

19.46Kromowidjojo led from halfway stage and powered to an Olympic record finish of 53.05. Halsall makes the final in join-fourth!

19.43Four came in in under 54 seconds there, and the second heat is expected to be quicker. Our girls are in for a tough one.

19.41Schlanger of Australia win the first heat with a time of 53.38. Our girls are up in the second heat.

19.40Fran Halsall and Amy Smith are in semi-final action in the women's 100m freestyle now.

19.39Jamieson's time was 2:07.43. It took a world record to beat that. He really was phenomenal!

19.37Bronze goes to Ryo Tateishi of Japan, and his compatriot Kitajima is consigned to fourth. Willis comes finishes in eighth.

19.35Gyurta lead at the turn and powers through the final length to set a new world record of 2:07.28, but Jamieson puts in a fantastic effort to come in second and claim silver!

19.34Kitajima is in the lead with the Brits in the chasing pack with Gyurta.

19.33Jamieson is in third, but it's early days.

19.33They're away! Some very good starts that. Both of the Brits cruise through the first 50m!

19.30The men's 200m breaststroke final is about to commence.

19.29Daniel Gyurta of Hungary is the favourite in that event, plus Kosuke Kitajima of Japan is in with a shout.

19.25Personally, I think our best shot at a medal tonight lies with Jamieson. Him and Willis taking respective sliver and bronze in the 200m breaststroke is within the realms of possibility.

19.17In our final race of the evening, Team GB are up in the women's 4x200m relay. Caitlin McClatchey and co did well to nab a fourth place finish in the heats. You can read about how that unfolded here.

19.11Amy Smith and Fran Halsall are in action in women's 100m freestyle, where they will go up against the likes of Missy Franklin and Jeanette Ottesen Gray. The very best of luck to them.

19.09Not to mention Team GB prospects James Goddard and Joe Roebuck!

19.06There's a mouthwatering semi-final later on, with Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte going head to head in the men's 200m individual medley, backed by a star-studded supporting cast that includes Chad le Clos and Laszlo Cseh.

19.04Jamieson has a particularly good shot at making it onto the podium after setting a new British record in the previous round. It would be fantastic if both of our medal hopefuls picked up a medal!

19.04Jamieson has a particularly good shot at making it onto the podium after setting a new British record in the previous round. It would be fantastic if both of our medal hopefuls picked up a medal!

19.02Andrew Willis and Michael Jamieson were on fire in the semi-finals. You can read about how they unfolded here.

19.00Welcome back to SM's live coverage of day five of the Olympic swimming. There are four gold medals up for grabs, and two of our boys are up for one of them in the men's 200m breaststroke final from 7.30pm!

12.02That's all from me this morning. We'll be back to bring you all the action from tonight's semi-finals and finals from 7.00pm. Do join us then!

12.00So good news for Team GB on more than one front this morning. Check out our swimming section here for a run down of today's results.

11.48Britain are into the final of the women's 4x200m freestyle relay, qualifying in seventh place.

11.48The USA wins the second heat, but Britain look good for a top eight spot.

11.42This is going to be a very fast heat. Italy are in the lead at present, and Britain could be in trouble here.

11.40The US are resting their big guns - Franklin and Soni, but we can never write them off.

11.36In the final event of the morning, the Australians come in first in the first heat of the women's 4x200m relay, but Jo Jackson of Team GB hit the side fourth, which may be enough for the final!

11.24An expert finish from the American. He comes in first!

11.23He's fourth at the halfway point, but he's a great breaststroke and freestyle swimmer.

11.22So what can Lochte do in the final heat?

11.21He comes in second behind Hagino of Japan, but will make it through comfortably with a time of 1:58.24. With one heat to go, Robuck is looking good for qualification.

11.20Phelps turns first at the halfway stage following a strong backstroke length.

11.18Phelps is in action now!

11.17Goddard is looking good for a semi-final place, finishing just behind Laszlo Cseh of Hungary. Robuck could go through with them. He came in fourth with a time of just over four minutes.

11.16Goddard is in second at the halfway stage. He needs to pick up the pace now! Robuck isn't far behind!

11.14Team GB's James Goddard and Joe Robuck are up in the next heat, but they have their work cut out against Chad le Clos of South Africa. Need I remind anyone what he achieved last night?

11.13It's the men's 200m individual medley now. Andrew Ford of Canada has just won the last of the unseeded heats.

11.05She misses out by 0.4 of a second. What a shame!

11.03It was a speedy heat, won by Soni. She comes in at 2:21.40. What does this mean for Tadd?

11.01Rebecca Soni of the US is one of the ones to watch in the final heat. She turns first after the opening stretch.

10.59She comes in sixth with a time of 2:27.18. A semi-final is possible with her in 13th overall. Joline Hostman of Sweden won it.

10.57She cruises through the first length and is first to turn, but is lies in fourth at the halfway stage.

10.56Let's see what Ms Tadd can do in her heat.

10.56Satomi Suzuki of Japan wins the third heat with a time of 2:23.22. Certainly good enough for a semi-final.

10.52Team GB's Stacey Tadd is in action in the fourth heat.

10.52It's the first seeded heat of the women's 200m breaststroke now.

10.40A masterclass in backstroke swimming during that final length from the American. He was fourth to turn, but picked up blistering speed for the final 50m to come in at 15:56.36.

10.38Lochte is in second at the halfway stage. He's in a strong position, it's all about preserving energy now.

10.37Here comes Lochte! He's the clear favourite in this event.

10.36Ryosuke Irie of Japan paces it well to win the fourth heat with 1:56.81.

10.32Slightly disappointing for the Brits in the backstroke there, coming in seventh and eighth. Tyler Clary wins it on 1:56.24, so that's the time to beat.

10.31News just in, Rebecca Adlington has pulled out of the women's 4x200m freestyle relay event. Read all about it here.

10.29Here comes the first seeded heat. We have two Britons in this - Chris Walker-Hebborn and Marco Loughran. They're up against Tyler Clary of the US.

10.28Men's 200m backstroke is under way, and we're into the unseeded heats.

10.18Both Halsall and Smith of Team GB make the semi-finals.

10.17Kromowidjojo and Franklin are third and fourth respectively, but both will go through. Melanie Schlanger of Australia wins it.

10.16The final heat has Franklin and the swift Ranomi Kromowidjojo of Holland, both gold medal hopefuls.

10.14Great swim for Halsall who comes in second on 54.02. Smith also has a shot at the semis on 54.37, coming in fifth. Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace of the Bahamas wins it.

10.13Halsall and Smith is up in heat six now.

10.12Never write off the Chinese! Tang Yi wins it on 53.2, Ottesen and Hardy are second and third, respectively. All three will certainly go through.

10.10Here comes heat five, a seeded heat that includes Jessica Hardy of the US and world champion Jeanette Ottesen Gray of Denmark.

10.09It doesn't look like her best stroke. She comes in fifth with a time of 56.33. That could make the semis. Burcu Dolunay of Turkey wins it on 55.35.

10.08Meilutyte is up in heat four. Is her freestyle as good as her breaststroke?

10.06A much quicker heat there, won by Eszter Dara of Hungary on 55.37s. She was the favourite to take that one, but it may not be enough for the semi-finals.

10.04Three come in at under 60 seconds in the second heat. Jade Howard of Zambia is fastest on 59.35.

10.02Mareme Faye of Senegal wins the first heat by a significant distance with a time of 1:06.42. Goof enough for the semi-finals? We'll see.

9.59Lithuanian sensation Ruta Meilutyte is up in heat four of this event. She's surely one to watch after her gold medal-winning performance in the 100m breaststroke.

9.58The first of seven heats is about to commence. Three unseeded swimmers take to the starting blocks.

9.51Halsall and Smith are in action just after 10.00 in the heats, then it's the men's backstroke with Lochte in action.

9.43But first up today is the women's 100m freestyle, in which Team GB's Fran Halsall and Amy Smith will swim during the sixth heat. Missy 'The Missile' Franklin of the USA will be tough to be in that event, though.

9.39Phelps is looking to increase that record today when he goes up against teammate and rival Ryan Lochte in the men's 200m individual medley. The heats take place just after 11.00 today.

9.37History was made at the Aquatics Centre yesterday when Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympian of all time after his USA team secured victory in the men's 2x400 relay. You can read all about it here.

9.36Good morning and welcome to our live commentary from day five of the Olympic swimming.
