England pip Australia to table tennis bronze at Commonwealth Games

England's women beat host nation Australia 3-1 in the table tennis finals to earn a bronze medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

England have beaten host nation Australia to the bronze medal in the women's table tennis finals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

In the best-of-five contest between the two nations, England's women came out on top 3-1 to claim the final spot on the podium with a game still to spare.

The opening match went all the way to five sets as England's Tin-Tin Ho and Australia's Melissa Tapper exchanged wins, before the Englishwoman won the decider 11-8 to put her country 1-0 up.

Jian Fang Lay picked up Australia's only victory of the night when she overcame Kelly Sibley in a thrilling contest which included a 21-19 scoreline in the second set.

Sibley got her revenge in the doubles shortly afterwards, however, beating Lay and Miao Miao inside four sets alongside Maria Tsaptsinos.

That left England just needing one win to clinch the bronze medal, and Ho delivered it in another five-set contest as Miao fell to her second defeat of the night.
