Nick Kyrgios fined £13,500 for breaching code of conduct at Shanghai Masters

The ATP fines Nick Kyrgios £13,500 for breaching the code of conduct at the Shanghai Masters.

Nick Kyrgios has been fined £13,500 by the ATP for breaching the code of conduct at the Shanghai Masters.

The Australian tennis star appeared to give up during his second-round defeat to Mischa Zverev, who is ranked 110th in the world.

The 21-year-old, who won the Japan Open in Tokyo last week, seemed disinterested in the match and at one point walked back to his seat before a return was hit.

Kyrgios also replied to a disgruntled fan in the crowd by saying: "You want to come and play?"

As a result of his behaviour, the Australian has been punished by the ATP, which released a statement reading: "After completion of the on-site investigation, Kyrgios received the on-site maximum fine of $10,000 (£8,200) for lack of best efforts, as well as a $5,000 (£4,100) fine for verbal abuse of a spectator, and a $1,500 (£1,200) fine for unsportsmanlike conduct."

After the match, Kyrgios told reporters that he did not owe the fans anything, but later took to Twitter to admit that he was "not good enough" in the contest.
