Ernests Gulbis has exited the China Open at the second-round stage after being forced to retire from his match against Martin Klizan.
The world number 13 made a slow start to the contest, losing serve on a couple of occasions in the opening set before being edged out 6-2.
The second set was heading in a similar direction with Klizan taking the first three games, although Gulbis was unable to continue, putting his doubles match later today in doubt as a result.
Gulbis was due to team up with Marcin Matkowski to take on Nocak Djokovic and Filip Krajinovic, although the Latvian pro is now unlikely to take part.
