The 19th seed made a comfortable start to the match, serving strongly in the opening set before putting his opponent under pressure and forcing the break.

However, the mistakes crept in from Lopez in the second to allow Ito back into the match, as the Japanese player broke his opponent's serve midway through the set.

The Spaniard seemed to be back on form in the third, hitting a string of aces in a dominant serving display to regain the lead in the match.

Both players struggled to attack each other's serves in the fourth, with neither facing a single break point before heading into the tie-break, but Lopez had just enough to get the better of Ito, hitting a couple of backhand winners to wrap up the match.

Lopez will face the winner of the match between Ernests Gulbis and Dominic Thiem in his next match.
