Garbine Muguruza comes through opening test at US Open

Garbine Muguruza begins her attempt to reach a second successive Grand Slam final with a win over Carina Witthoeft in the US Open first round.

Garbine Muguruza has advanced past Carina Witthoeft to reach the second round of the US Open.

The ninth seed has failed to win a match since reaching the Wimbledon final in July, but she got back on track with a 6-2 6-4 win on Tuesday.

The Spaniard broke serve twice on the way to taking the opening set, but a number of unforced errors allowed Witthoeft to remain competitive in the second.

However, after the pair traded breaks, Muguruza struck for a second time to move through to the last 64, where she will now play British representative Johanna Konta.
