British number one Heather Watson loses in first round of US Open

Great Britain's Heather Watson is beaten 6-1 6-1 by Sorana Cirstea in the first round of the US Open.

British number one Heather Watson has been knocked out in the first round of the US Open for the fourth year in a row.

The 22-year-old was convincingly beaten on Court 13 at Flushing Meadows by Sorana Cirstea, who is ranked 34 places below the Brit.

Cirstea, of Romania, needed just 54 minutes to beat Watson, losing just two games in a 6-1 6-1 success.

Next up in the second round for Cirstea, who reaches the stage for the third straight year, is either seventh seed Eugenie Bouchard or Olga Govortsova.
