John McEnroe backs Roger Federer to triumph at Wimbledon this year.

Tennis legend John McEnroe has backed Roger Federer to win his seventh Wimbledon title this year.

The American believes that the world number three is still hungry for glory, having won 16 Grand Slam titles already.

Federer has taken a back seat to Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in recent years but McEnroe said that Wimbledon is his best chance for the 30-year-old to turn the tide.

"I'm picking Federer to win at Wimbledon," said McEnroe. "It's still his best chance to win another Major.

"Roger is a much better athlete than people give him credit for. He wants to win it so badly and the Wimbledon crowd always root for him – so these factors, I believe, will help him win it."

McEnroe revealed that he does not fancy British number one Andy Murray's chances at SW19.

Instead, the 53-year-old has tipped Tomas Berdych and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to win their first slam this year.

"As each event goes by, Murray's first Grand Slam seems less likely to happen," he added. "He is the same age as Djokovic and a year younger than Nadal. Look what they've already achieved.

"I think Tomas Berdych and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga have a better chance of breaking through this year."

Federer's last Major victory came in the 2010 Australian Open.
