The United States have secured the gold medal in the women's water polo event at the World Swimming Championships in Russia, defeating the Netherlands 5-4 in the final.

Kiley Neushul and Courtney Mathewson both scored late in the third to leave the USA two points up going into the final period, but Maud Megans added her second of the match early in the fourth to keep it close.

Megans came close to forcing a penalty shootout when she tried to add a third with just 13 seconds on the clock, but Ashleigh Johnson pulled off her 12th save of the night to seal it for the USA.

The result means the Netherlands will take home the silver medal, while Italy claim the final step on the podium after beating Australia in the bronze medal match earlier this evening.
