Germany's Eric Frenzel wins Nordic combined gold

German skier Eric Frenzel wins gold in the Nordic combined individual normal event at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

Germany's Eric Frenzel has won gold in the Nordic combined individual normal hill event at the Winter Olympics this afternoon.

The 25-year-old held a six-second advantage over Akito Watabe of Japan going into the final cross-country race.

Watabe and Frenzel, who opened up an early lead over the chasing pack, exchanged the lead on several occasions throughout the race.

However, Frenzel skied away in the final stages to win by 4.2 seconds with a time of 23:50.2.

Watabe took the silver in 23:54.4 and Magnus Krog of Norway earned the bronze medal with 23:58.3.
