NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has confirmed that a decision on extending the playoffs to 14 teams will most likely not be made in time for the 2014 season.
The issue was thought to be discussed in the NFL annual meeting in March, but with a number of parties required to agree on any decision it appears more likely that it will be confirmed for 2015 instead.
"It's not out of the question, but we didn't make that decision at all [in March]," Goodell told NFL.com.
"We have more work to do. I wouldn't rule it out, but I wouldn't say that's the direction we're headed right now."
There are currently 12 teams who qualify for the playoffs each season.
