Russell Wilson takes out injury insurance with Seattle Seahawks future in balance

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson admits that he has taken out an injury insurance policy to protect his financial future as he is yet to secure a long-term deal.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has confirmed that he has taken out an injury insurance policy as his long-term future with the club is still in the balance.

The 26-year-old is entering the final year of his rookie deal with the Seahawks, but has yet to come to a long-term agreement on a new contract, despite the high level of his play over his first three seasons in the NFL.

Wilson has taken steps to secure his future by attaining an injury policy for the 2015 season as he will be paid just $1.5m (£944,000) for the campaign.

"That's just being smart," Wilson told reporters about taking out the policy.

"If I do have to play this season (without signing-bonus cash from a new, long-term contract), that's just being smart. That's all that is, really. I think that's the right thing to do."

Wilson has thrown for 9,950 yards along with 72 touchdowns to 26 interceptions in his three years in the NFL.
