Pete Carroll: 'Russell Wilson contract will not force rebuild'

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll insists that his side will not be forced to make changes to their roster when they hand quarterback Russell Wilson a new deal.

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is adamant that his side will not be forced into rebuilding their roster if they hand quarterback Russell Wilson a lucrative contract extension.

Wilson is reportedly set to become the highest-paid player in the NFL in the off-season by signing a deal worth $25m (£16.6m) per year, which will take up a large chunk of the Seahawks' salary cap in the coming seasons.

However, Carroll has insisted that his side have made plans for such a measure and won't be forced into radical changes.

"They had to have a big sea change in their football team because of the financial aspect of that," Carroll told reporters.

"We don't anticipate that. We think we're structured in a way that we can hold on."

The Seahawks will aim to become the first team since the 2004 New England Patriots to defend their Super Bowl crown on Sunday.
