Team GB sprinter Matthew Hudson-Smith qualifies for the men's 400m final at the Rio Olympics.

Team GB sprinter Matthew Hudson-Smith has qualified for the final of the men's 400m at the Rio Olympics after a spirited performance in the semi-finals.

The 21-year-old was in sixth place heading into the last 100m at the Olympic Stadium but made a powerful comeback in the final straight to finish second with a personal best time of 44.48s.

The performance left him four-hundredths of a second behind heat winner Bralon Taplin and just one-hundredth of a second ahead of third-placed Ali Khamis, who still qualifies for the final as second-fastest loser.

Defending champion Kirani James was comfortably into the final, qualifying as the fastest athlete from the semi-finals with a time of 44.02s, almost two-tenths of a second ahead of the USA's Lashawn Merritt.

Meanwhile, the silver and bronze medallists from London 2012 - Luguelin Santos (44.71s) and Lalonde Gordon (45.13s) - both failed to make the cut.

The men's 400m final takes place on Sunday at 10pm local time (2am Monday UK).
