Kevin Routledge: 'Great British basketball needs funding before 2016'

British Basketball Union chairman Kevin Routledge believes that the sport in Great Britain requires more funding ahead of the Olympic Games in 2016.

British Basketball Union chairman Kevin Routledge has revealed that the organisation has welcomed UK Sport's decision to reconsider their future funding plans.

The current strategy is medal-based, meaning that Team GB's poor performance in the sport in London in 2012 has resulted in more funding being provided for other sports rather than basketball.

However, UK Sport have since revealed that they will launch a public consultation to consider alterations to the strategy, but while Routledge is encouraged by the upcoming meeting, he has insisted that changes must be made before the next Olympics in 2016.

Routledge told BBC Sport: "While consulting goes on, there are talented youngsters not able to realise their potential.

"Clearly we very much welcome the announcement, but we are a little disappointed that it has taken two years to get to this stage, post London.

"We believe that there is no need to do a long consultation, nor are we sure why implementation has to wait until post Rio."

The men's and women's teams managed just one win between them in 10 matches at 2012.
