Live Commentary: Twenty20 international - India vs. England - as it happened

Good afternoon everyone. Exciting match in prospect today and while sport in England continues to be disrupted by the weather, today's game will be played in the cool temperatures of a Mumbai evening.

We'll start with a bit of team news, with both sides making just the one change for today's game. Danny Briggs makes way for Joe Root, who makes his debut in this format. Rohit Sharma will play for the hosts today, replacing Ravindra Jadeja.

England have won the toss and Eoin Morgan has announced that his side will bowl first in Mumbai.

Despite the disappointing crowds during the Test series, the Indian supporters have once again turned out in big numbers for today's match.

In truth, England just didn't play well in Pune on Thursday and India will always take advantage in this format of the game. The hosts deservedly lead this mini series but a victory for England today would ensure a positive result in the two matches.

Root plays a T20 for the first time in an England shirt today and after impressing in the final Test match, we're certain to see a different side to him in Mumbai. The Yorkshire youngster has a fabulous array of shots and is likely to bowl a bit too.

We saw Yuvraj Singh at his best in Pune and he really is a class act in this format. England must get him when he does come into bat or the left-hander could take the game away from the tourists once again.

Here we go then. Gambhir and Rahane have made their way out to the middle and the England fielders look ready to start. Tim Bresnan will open the bowling.

Bresnan begins with a nice line outside off stump but a wayward bouncer results in a wide being confirmed by the umpire. A nudge off the pads brings Gambhir a single before Rahane flirts with a swinging delivery wide of off stump. Three more singles follow in the over and it's a decent start from Bresnan.

Dernbach will share the new ball with Bresnan.

Rahane gets off strike immediately with a flick off the hip to square leg before Gambhir's attempts to run a single are thwarted by Morgan's impressive fielding at gully. Gambhir is then beaten by a sharp bouncer but does find a single with a nudge to mid-wicket.

England have made a crucial early breakthrough. Rahane walks down the pitch but an attempted big shot flies to Root at deep third man and the debutant takes a good catch. Kohli is the new batsman but he survives the final ball of the over.

Bresnan is finding some nice swing early on but Gambhir reads the movement well to push the ball onto the leg-side for a single. Kohli is off the mark with a well timed push through the covers for a couple of runs. A single earns the new batsman another and the strike is rotated once again by Gambhir with a guide to gully. Six scored in the over and India are yet to find the boundary rope.

First boundary of the match as Kohli smacks a length ball from Dernabch through mid-wicket for four runs. Even better shot follows from India's number three as he rocks back onto the back foot to fire the ball through the off-side for another boundary. Dernbach delivers a wide ball and Kohli picks up another single to mid-on before Gambhir keeps the strike with another run.

Meaker begins his first spell but Gambhir is away with a single to mid-on. Awful delivery from the pace bowler follows and Buttler is left with no chance as the ball races away for five wides. Too short as Kohli pulls for four runs before handing the strike to his partner and the left-handed Gambhir launches the ball over mid-wicket for four more runs. 15 from Meaker's first over.

Wright enters the attack for the first time but he's met with a superb cover drive from Kohli, resulting in four more runs for India. Kohli then runs well to find two with a flick to fine leg, it's a no ball and the right-hander will have a free hit. Wright can't stem the flow of runs and Kohli smashes the freebie past mid-on for four. England have been too sloppy in these last couple of overs. Another two boundaries for Kohli as he whips the ball through square leg before driving through extra cover for four. Kohli now has 37 and it's 20 from Wright's first over.

Too many extras and too many boundary ball being delivered by England. India and particularly Kohli, are enjoying this so far.

Meaker surprisingly continues following his poor opening over but Kohli is happy to take a single early on. Two leg-byes follow before a short ball is given as a wide. A slower bouncer is missed by Gambhir but Buttler fumbles the ball behind the stumps and it's a bye.

Meaker hasn't been threatening but he has a wicket out of nowhere. Kohli is hit on the pads by an in-swinging delivery and the umpire quickly raises the finger. The ball looks like it may have done too much and Kohli will feel hard done by there.

Meaker delivers another wide towards the end of the over but he has taken the key wicket of Kohli. Yuvraj Singh is the new batsman.

First spell of spin today as James Tredwell comes on to bowl for England. Gambhir is off strike with a push to deep cover for a single and Yuvraj does well to get off the mark with a nudge to point. Singles come very easily in the over, with five being scored by the Indian batsmen. Good start for Tredwell.

Big, big wicket for England! Wright delivers a shorter ball on his return to the attack and Yuvraj can only loft the ball to Root, who takes his second catch of the day at long-on.

Sharma is off the mark from his first ball with a mistimed cut shot for a single but the new batsman is back on strike when Gambhir nudges the ball onto the off-side. Six scored in the over but it's a good return for Wright.

Gambhir has a big role to play now for India but he's only scored 14 from 22 balls.

Tredwell continues and Gambhir gives himself some room to loft the ball to deep extra cover for a single. Sharma thinks twice about smashing the ball straight down the ground but chooses to defend. However, he does advance down the pitch just one ball later to hit the first six of the game. A sharp single is taken to Morgan at point and Gambhir will keep the strike following a push to mid-wicket.

Wright's new over begins with Gambhir flicking a single to fine leg. Sharma attempts a big shot but the ball deflects off his own pad and it's just the one run for India.

Gambhir just hasn't looked at his fluent best and departs the field after heaving the ball high into the air, allowing Bresnan to take a good catch at fine leg. Sharma finishes the over by pushing a single to mid-on, Suresh Raina is the new batsman.

Sharma times a shot nicely off his toes to bring Raina on strike for the first time in the game. The new batsman looks slightly scratchy at the crease and is close to edging the ball towards Buttler. A pull to square leg allows Raina to get off strike with a single and Sharma adds another with a push off his hip. A top edge from Raina ends the over but it's a single rather than a wicket.

Tredwell returns for a new spell and Raina plods the ball onto the off-side for a single early in the over. A push to long-on hands Sharma another before a stoppage takes place while the Indian batsman changes his gloves. Lumb does brilliantly at deep mid-wicket to prevent Raina from reaching the boundary rope and Meaker shows more good fielding to restrict the duo to a single at fine leg. Six runs from the over.

Superb shot from Sharma as he drives the ball over mid-off to pick up four runs and bring up three figures for India in the process. Wright fields well off his own bowling to stop another cover drive but the batsman does pick the gap next ball to earn two to extra cover. It could have been more but Bresnan does brilliantly on the boundary rope. Nine runs in total from Wright's final over

There's very little turn for the spinner but Tredwell removes Sharma with a straight ball that crashes into the stumps. He deserves that wicket and this is good from England. Captain Dhoni is the new batsman.

Dhoni is off the mark immediately with a cut to deep cover for one run before Raina clips the ball to mid-wicket for another single. India's skipper cuts hard outside off stump but a thick edge brings four, much to the frustration of Tredwell. Decent figures of 1-27 from the spinner's four overs.

Bresnan returns and he immediately finds the edge of Raina but Buttler fails to take a superb diving catch, meaning India take a single to third man. Dhoni then manages to guide the ball past the fielder at square leg and he collects four runs. There's another edge but this time it's off the inside of the bat and Dhoni earns two runs to fine leg, with Meaker doing the fielding on the rope. Two from the final ball means it's nine from the over.

This will be a big over as Meaker returns to the attack.

India start the over superbly as Raina lofts the ball over extra cover for four fantastic runs. The same batsman then guides a slower ball to third man for a single before Dhoni earns a run with a nudge through mid-wicket. Slice of luck for Raina as he top edges a pull shot over Buttler for four runs. Poor from Meaker as he follows that delivery with a leg stump half volley, allowing Raina to launch the ball over the rope on the leg-side for six runs. Brilliant over for India as Raina once again finds the boundary with a flick off the hips for four. 20 more to India's total, three overs remaining.

Too easy for India as Dernbach goes short on his return, only to see Dhoni pull the ball powerfully for six runs. Good running from the Indian duo as Dhoni finds two runs with a punch through mid-wicket before two more comes with a pull behind square on the leg-side. Once again Dhoni runs two towards the end of the over before a powerful drive results in a flat six. India are finishing the innings superbly!

Raina moves to 30 with a single early in Bresnan's over and a wild heave earns Dhoni four runs to square leg. Bresnan goes fuller but Dhoni still manages to pick up two runs to deep mid-wicket.

Dhoni's crucial innings comes to an end but the damage may have already been done. India's captain walks off after picking out Patel at mid-wicket with a mistimed pull shot.

Just one more single scored by Ashwin from the remainder of the over. England have allowed India to get too many thanks to some poor bowling.

Dernbach begins the final over but a leg bye means Raina is able to come on strike early on. A cut shot is mistimed and it results in only a single.

England pick up another wicket as Ashwin's attempt to clear the boundary rope ends with Lumb taking a simple catch in the deep on the off-side.

Dernbach delivers a high full toss, meaning Raina is reprieved despite picking out Patel in the deep. Two runs and an extra are given before Raina picks up one more with a deflection off his pad. Chawla, the new batsman, advances down the pitch but he can't make contact with a sharp bouncer. Eight from the final over, with a run out coming from the last ball as Chawla (0) considered a second run.

India make 177 and that is a total which demands something special from the England batsman. The tourists should have restricted their opponents to much less but sloppy bowling allowed Dhoni (38) and Raina (34*) to add some crucial runs.

The dew on the ground means England should enjoy batting but 178 is a very daunting target. A good start is needed and the tourists will need their big players to perform.

India enjoy this format of the game and you can see why after that innings. Kohli, in particular, played superbly for his 38.

Lumb and Hales are out of the dressing room and they know that early runs are desperately needed.

Dinda will open the bowling for India.

Lumb is gifted a boundary immediately as his powerful cut is deflected onto the rope by Awana in the deep. A nudge off the hip brings the opener a single and Hales begins his innings in superb fashion with a lofted cut over point for four runs. Another cut shot earns Hales two more, a wide ball follows and it's a good start for England.

Awana will share the new ball with Dinda but this time Lumb struggles at the beginning of the over, failing to make contact with a pull shot. Another pull shot follows but a thick top edge from Lumb earns him four runs to fine leg. It's short once again from Awana and there's much better contact from the bat this time, with Lumb picking up six runs over the head of Dinda at fine leg. There's a big delay as some repairs are made to the bowler's run-up midway through the over. Another lofted pull shot drops well short of Dinda at fine leg and a dive ensures Lumb is safe, earning two runs in the process. An edge to third man from the final ball means Lumb will keep the strike. England off to an absolute flyer in Mumbai.

Dinda continues for now but the England batsmen run a leg bye at the beginning of his new over. Hale is now on strike and he reacts well to a mistimed cut to collect a quick single before Lumb is struck on the thigh pad, resulting in another leg bye. Wow! It's an absolute shock from Awana in the deep as Hales hammers a pull shot into the air but the fielder somehow manages to put it down. Lumb adds to Dinda's misery, lofting the ball over mid-wicket to collect four runs.

Ashwin comes on but the first ball of spin is too short and Hales picks up an easy single to square leg. The England pair have to hurry when Lumb calls for two runs but Hales does well to respond and get in safely. Another rushed couple of runs to deep mid-wicket follows later in the over and England score six from Ashwin's opener.

Awana switches ends but his frustration continues as Lumb opens the face to a full delivery to earn four runs to third man. Lumb is showing his class today as he goes past his previous best international score with a punch through extra cover for four more. A play and a miss follows from Lumb, prompting a gasp from the Indian crowd but the Nottinghamshire man is safe. A leg bye means it's nine from the over

Lumb skips down the pitch at the start of Ashwin's new over to launch the ball down the ground for six superb runs. A nudge off the pads brings the same batsman and Hales decides it's his turn to have some fun as he sweeps the ball powerfully for four runs. Hales almost picks out Raina with a push into the air on the leg-side but the ball drops safely and a single is the result. 13 from the over and England now need 116 from 84 balls.

Dhoni introduces the leg-spinner Chawla into the attack for the first time today but a leg bye allows Lumb to get off strike immediately. A shorter ball gives Hales the opportunity to cut but only a single this time. Lumb adds another with a push to third man. There is some big turn for Chawla but the ball strikes Hales on the thigh pad and there's another leg bye. Six from the over.

Hales dances his way down the pitch and he earns six runs with an elegant shot over mid-wicket. Perfect from Hales and he adds another to the total with a clip to square leg. Ashwin finds the outside edge of Lumb but there's no slip and four more runs come for England. Half century for Lumb, very good innings from the opener.

Hales gets off strike early in the over as Yuvraj begins his bowling stint.

Lumb takes a couple of steps down the pitch but he misses a huge heave and Dhoni whips the bails off easily. Wright in next for England and they must not lose their focus.

Wright defends his first couple of balls but he is off the mark with a swept single. Great over from Yuvraj and England must play him better for the rest of his spell. India need more wickets.

Wright slices a Chawla short ball to long-off for a single before Hales drives a full toss through Raina at cover for four runs. The England duo then trade singles, with Hales ending the over by dragging the ball to mid-wicket for two more runs,

Yuvraj will be counting himself lucky as a half volley is well stopped by Raina at cover following a powerful connection from Wright. The same batsman takes a couple of steps down the pitch but kicks it away to collect a leg bye. Hales sweeps again but he only picks up a single to Dinda at deep fine leg. Wright makes some room for himself at the crease before guiding the ball past point for two more runs.

Yuvraj strikes again! Wright is struck on the pads and it looks pretty straight, the umpire agrees and Yuvraj has his second wicket. Eoin Morgan in next for the tourists.

Hales takes a single from the start of a new over from Ashwin, bringing Morgan on strike. The skipper lofts the ball into the air on the off-side but he only earns one run. Hales adds another with a clip to deep mid-wicket before Morgan finds the boundary rope with a superb reverse sweep. Nine from Ashwin's over and that's a good response from England following the dismissal of Wright.

England need 75 runs from 48 balls.

A leg-bye is awarded at the start of Yuvraj's new over and Morgan has no problems taking a single with a push to deep cover. Dinda finally does some good work in the deep to restrict Hales to two runs at deep square leg. A sweep brings the same batsman a single before Morgan adds one more to the total with a similar shot.

Chawla is back into the attack but he delivers a gift outside leg stump and Morgan sweeps the ball to the boundary rope with a fair amount of style. The skipper pushes the ball to long-on for a single and Hales then gets on top of a full toss to smash the ball through extra cover for four. Morgan is beaten by a beauty later in the over but 11 is scored by England and the runs are flowing too easily from an Indian viewpoint.

Morgan punches Yuvraj's first ball of a new over onto the leg-side for a single and Hales rotates the strike with one to long-on.

Hales tries to sweep the ball out of the ground but he can only pick out Dinda at deep square leg. Yuvraj has another wicket and we're in for a fantastic finish today. Samit Patel is the new batsman.

Good response by Morgan following a wicket as he slog sweeps the ball in front of square for four runs. Hales should be happy with his contribution in this mini series. Yuvraj's spell ends and he takes 3 for 17 from his four overs.

Awana is back with five overs left in the match. Patel is given a huge lifeline as a lofted shot onto the leg-side is put down by Chawla at square leg. Poor fielding once again from an Indian point of view. Morgan adds a single to deep cover before Patel punches one to long-on for another. Morgan hammers the ball through extra cover and that's a vital boundary for England. Four overs left and the tourists need 44 to win.

Chawla continues and Patel begins the over superbly, smashing the ball over extra cover for four runs. Morgan is back on strike when Patel nudges the ball to long-on and the stand-in skipper adds another run with a straight drive. Patel finds another single, seven from the over.

England now need 37 runs from three overs. it's going to be very, very close.

It's Dinda who comes on to replace Awana. A guided shot to third man from Patel hands the strike to Morgan. Big time for Morgan to find the boundary as he adds four more to his side's total with a sliced cut over backward point. The stand-in skipper then does well to work the ball through a gap on the leg-side for two runs.

Patel's pull shot is struck high into the air and Gambhir takes the routine catch on the leg-side. It's time for Buttler to come to the crease but the batsmen crossed, meaning Morgan is on strike for the final ball of the over. Wow! Morgan crunches the ball powerfully over mid-wicket and it's six runs to the captain. Massive shot at a hugely important time.

Awana begins the 19th over by conceding a single, meaning Buttler is off the mark and Morgan has the strike. The stand-in skipper eyes mid-wicket again but it's just the one run this time. Superb shot follows from Buttler as he picks the gap at extra cover to collect four priceless runs. A short ball is then punched down the ground for a single before Morgan drives the ball for another, with Raina fielding impressively at mid-off. What a shot! Buttler stands tall and clears the boundary rope with a fantastic shot straight down the ground. Awesome shot from Buttler to give England a real chance here.

England need nine runs from the final over and it will be Dinda who bowls the crucial six balls. Tense!

Morgan lofts the first ball straight down the ground but it's just a single for England's captain. There's a quick bat change for him just to add to the tension in Mumbai. Buttler only finds a single with a powerful cover drive. Seven more needed and it will be a super over if the scores are tied at 20 overs. Morgan eyes the big shot but the ball drops short of Kohli at deep mid-wicket, just a single once again. Ashwin then does superbly at third man to prevent a superb piece of improvised batting from Buttler reaching the boundary. Two runs taken though and four are still needed for the tourists. Buttler misses a flick to third man but the batsmen run anyway. England need three from the final ball to win.

England win by six wickets! Absolutely astonishing from Morgan. Dinda takes an age to bowl the final ball but when he does, Morgan launches the ball straight into the stands for six runs. England secure a quite magnificent victory in Mumbai. Brilliant from Morgan.

The England players look absolutely overjoyed following that piece of magic from their stand-in skipper. India will feel they should have recorded a win after reaching 177 in their innings. That's England's highest ever successful run chase.

Lumb, Hales and Morgan all deserve credit for their displays with the bat today. This two-match series ends 1-1 but it will be England who will head back home for Christmas the happier of the two sides.

The England squad will board a flight to come home but they'll be back in India in the new year for the one-day series.
