A Guardia Civil traffic officer has died during stage 16 of the Vuelta a Espana after his motorcycle was involved in a crash.
Spanish newspaper Marca reports that the 41-year-old officer died after his his motorcycle left the road and crashed some two hours before the end of the stage.
According to a police statement, the accident took place at about 3.30pm local time.
The accident occurred at kilometre marker 22 on the regional road AS-228 that joins Trubia with Ventana in the Spanish region of Asturias.
The deceased was stationed in Albacete and was on escort duty during this year's Vuelta. His body was removed by helicopter.
