Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has claimed that he is looking forward to having competition for his place in the side next season.

Wilshere's time at the Gunners has been disrupted by injuries in the last few seasons, but the England international has established himself as one of the club's most valuable players when fit.

However, with manager Arsene Wenger reported to have money to spend, Wilshere believes that he may have more competition this season, which he insists is a good thing for the squad.

"I am really looking forward to having a solid pre-season. I haven't had one in two years and once you miss it, you are always playing catch-up," said Wilshere.

"It's a chance to show the manager that you deserve to be in the team and I think there's going to be competition for a few spots, but that's a good thing.

"If you're going to challenge for trophies, you need a big squad. You can't expect 11 players to do it every week."

Wilshere made 33 appearances for the Gunners last season, helping them make a late surge to secure Champions League football.
